Is Your Facility El Niño Ready?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency, computer models indicate that a strong El Niño will continue through the Northern Hemisphere this winter into late spring. The greatest impact is predicted to hit the US over the next three months. The devastating flooding that has hit Missouri and Illinois it is a “call to action” for all health facilities to be ready to respond effectively when presented with a weather emergency. It is time to review and update your emergency procedures related to these high risk events. Below are some websites with helpful information for long term care facilities.
Also, this is a good time to pick up the phone and talk to your local emergency managers; either emergency medical system (EMS), public health, or the local city or county disaster preparedness coordinator. Check with them about your plan, and ask them what local plans are in place should a serious weather event happen. If you don’t know who your local emergency planner is, try asking at your local fire house. Tell them you want to discuss your emergency preparedness for flooding. Another resource would be the safety officer at your local hospital. They should know who is in charge of the local medical/health emergency response plan and can put you in touch with them. The time to get to know the people you need in an emergency is before that emergency occurs.
